I have heard a few times in my life the phrase “Words Matter” and like many things I stop and try to figure out what that means in my psyche and then blurt out some outrageous comment, so here it is in writing. I would say we have come up with millions of “words” over time in order to help us converse with one another but I believe that only represents part of a communication. In my opinion understanding the intention, context and the meaning of words you are hearing or speaking become more important than the actual words themselves. Words can be spelled the same and mean different things, words can sound the same, but also mean different things, they can be spelled and sound completely different but have the same meaning, the same exact word can be used and still mean different things depending on how it was used. So if you let words matter too much it can be very confusing. I don’t speak any language fluently so I must rely on gestures, inflections and vocal gymnastics to try to make my point, but when the other individual I am trying to conversing with comprehends me pointing at something or a just a look in the eye, you start to realize words are just another tool in trying to communicate with our fellow human beings, we can still have no idea the words they are saying, but understand them perfectly, and that’s where I believe the importance lies.
